Friench and Martha Tarkington co-chaired the event and Friench served as Chief Auditor. Martin Benke served as Head Judge. At the last minute, another party showed up claiming the same Pavillion. The Park Supervisor determined the other party had made payment for the Pavillion first and we had to leave. A compromise was reached whereby we moved about 200 feet to a cluster of picnic tables under large oaks. The move delayed starting the competition about an hour, but with everyone chipping in to make the move the competition went smoothly thereafter. President Jack Keller awarded the ribbons. SARWG 2005 Spring Competition WinnersThe San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Spring Competition was held on a beautiful April 10th at Raymond Russell Park. Competition Chairperson Rob Overley organized and chaired the event. Eugena Wright served as Chief Steward and Jack Keller was Head Judge. Bob Wehner and Rob Overley did an outstanding job handling registration and Bob also served as Chief Auditor. Kay Wehner ran the Sweepstakes and raked in $136 for the SARWG treasury. Turn-out was a bit light because the Central Texas Wine Guild, which contains a number of SARWG members, held a winery/vineyard tour on the same day and those members were not present. This did not detract from the competiveness of the event or quality of the wines. The food spread was again outstanding and the tasting table offered a wonderful diversity. Marvin Nebgen conducted a short business meeting and awarded the ribbons. Four new members from Helotes, Texas (Andy & Joan Ulsher and Kevin & Dawn Pellone) joined at the competition and Vernon Speer, from Jefferson City, Missouri joined about two weeks prior and shipped his wines to his brother for entry. All of the new members won ribbons at their first SARWG competition. Best of Show Winners

Luke Clark served as Chief Steward and Marvin Nebgen accepted the position as Head Judge. Donna Keller and Kay Wehner ran the Sweepstakes. The food, as usual, was outstanding, but for the first time in memory the tasting table ran dry before judging was completed. Marvin Nebgen awarded the ribbons and conducted the shortest business meeting anyone remembers. Ted and Mona Ashley drove down from Richardson, Texas, joined the Guild, and participated in their first SARWG competition. SARWG 2003 Fall Competition WinnersThe San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Fall Competition was held October 26th at Raymond Russell Park. Competition Chairperson Jack Keller did a great job organizing the event and preparing the many forms needed, but, because Keith Sundberg brought his laptop and wine judging program, most of the forms weren't needed. Keith did an outstanding job handling registration and auditing duties practically single-handed. He did, however, get help from several members -- Eugina Wright, Lynette Clark, Jack Keller, and Luke Clark to name a few. The food, again, was outstanding, and the tasting table perhaps the best it has been in a long time. The weather was, well, wet and cold, but Henry Daly made a wood run and got the big barbecue barrel heated up just in time to ward off hyperthermia. Dick Thackston served as Head Steward at his first meeting (way to go Dick!) and Luke Clark served as Head Judge. Donna Keller ran the Sweepstakes. Marvin Nebgen awarded the ribbons and conducted a short business meeting. Best of Show Winners

2000 Spring Competition WinnersThe San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Spring Competition on April 16th at Raymond Russell Park was a bittersweet affair. 1998 Fall Home Wine Competition Had Stunning TieThe San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's Fall Home Wine Competition was held November 1st, 1998, at Raymond-Russell Park, I-10 West, north of Loop 1604, between San Antonio and Leon Springs. Competition Chairperson Tom Wells announced the judges could not break a tie for the Best of Show in the non-grape category, so two Best of Shows were awarded in that category and one in the grape category. For Susie Higgins, who walked off with one of the Best of Show distinctions, this was her first competition. We look forward to her future entries. SARWG President Rodney Hitch did a fantasic job as head judge, and we thank all those who loaned their taste buds and considerable talents to judging the event. Tricia Hitch ran the auditing team and Jan Sundberg managed the sweepstakes. Todd Huntress of San Antonio Home Brew and Wine Supplies donated some very nice prizes to accompany the Best of Show Awards. Best of Show Winners

Looking Back:1998 Spring Competition a Huge SuccessThe Home Wine and Beer Trade Association's International Home Wine Competition, held May 23rd in San Antonio, Texas, was a real feather in San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) collective cap. In addition to hosting and administering the event, SARWG members won two gold, four silvers, and four bronze medals. Rodney Hitch, Head Judge, did a terrific job of matching up the resident SARWG judges and guest judges for appropriate categories. Judges may, in fact, enter wines into competition, but may not judge a category they have wine entered in. SARWG extends a collective thanks to Lee Fuqua for the extra effort in driving down from Dallas to help out. Tricia Hitch, Chief Auditor, had a lot of help from Bob Wehner and Brenda Harper. Our thanks to them for all their dedication and energy in an otherwise thankless job. Jane Sundberg and Kay Wehner did a splendid job in the kitchen. The judging team consisted of Rod Hitch, Lee Fuqua, Tom Wells, Millie Wells, Paul Newell, Sari-Jane Newell, Charlie Suehs, Steve Nesbit, Greg Howard, Keith Sundberg, Ronnie Manes, and Chris Brogly.
