SARWG 2012 Spring Competition Winners

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's 2011 Spring Competition was held April 22nd, 2012 at Raymond Russell Regional Park, north of San Antonio, Texas. Friench and Martha Tarkington co-chaired the event and Friench served as Chief Auditor. Martin Benke served as Head Judge. At the last minute, another party showed up claiming the same Pavillion. The Park Supervisor determined the other party had made payment for the Pavillion first and we had to leave. A compromise was reached whereby we moved about 200 feet to a cluster of picnic tables under large oaks. The move delayed starting the competition about an hour, but with everyone chipping in to make the move the competition went smoothly thereafter.

President Jack Keller awarded the ribbons.

SARWG 2005 Spring Competition Winners

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Spring Competition was held on a beautiful April 10th at Raymond Russell Park. Competition Chairperson Rob Overley organized and chaired the event. Eugena Wright served as Chief Steward and Jack Keller was Head Judge.

SARWG 2004 Spring Competition Winners

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Spring Competition was held April 18th at Raymond Russell Park. Competition Chairperson Jack Keller organized the event and prepared the many forms needed.

Randall Wimbish did an outstanding job handling registration and Bob Wehner served as Chief Auditor. Luke Clark served as Chief Steward and Marvin Nebgen accepted the position as Head Judge. Donna Keller and Kay Wehner ran the Sweepstakes.

The food, as usual, was outstanding, but for the first time in memory the tasting table ran dry before judging was completed. Attendees descended upon the competing wines once the first place winners were segregated for the Best of Show judging.

Marvin Nebgen awarded the ribbons and conducted the shortest business meeting anyone remembers. Ted and Mona Ashley drove down from Richardson, Texas, joined the Guild, and participated in their first SARWG competition. In the tradition of SARWG members over the decades, Ted walked away with his share of ribbons. Way to go Ted.

SARWG 2003 Fall Competition Winners

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) Fall Competition was held October 26th at Raymond Russell Park. Competition Chairperson Jack Keller did a great job organizing the event and preparing the many forms needed, but, because Keith Sundberg brought his laptop and wine judging program, most of the forms weren't needed. Keith did an outstanding job handling registration and auditing duties practically single-handed. He did, however, get help from several members -- Eugina Wright, Lynette Clark, Jack Keller, and Luke Clark to name a few. The food, again, was outstanding, and the tasting table perhaps the best it has been in a long time. The weather was, well, wet and cold, but Henry Daly made a wood run and got the big barbecue barrel heated up just in time to ward off hyperthermia.

Dick Thackston served as Head Steward at his first meeting (way to go Dick!) and Luke Clark served as Head Judge. Donna Keller ran the Sweepstakes. Marvin Nebgen awarded the ribbons and conducted a short business meeting.

SARWG President Takes Grand Champion
at 2000 Atascosa County Fair

SARWG President Jack Keller entered eight wines in the October 14th Atascosa County Fair Homemade Wine Competition. He placed five of them, plus took the Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion for the second year in a row.

The judges seemed to favor sweet wines. Jack's Texas Native Mustang Grape (Sweet) took Grand Champion, while his Black Manukka (Sweet) took the Reserve Grand Champion rosette. Both wines naturally won first place in their classes, while Black Manukka (Dry) won a second and both Mustang (Dry) and Jamaica Rosé won third place ribbons. As far as Jack knows, this was the first appearance ever in competition for Jamaica.

After the competition, Jack spoke with Fair organizers about opening the competition next year to "South-Central Texas." The proposal will be voiced at the next meeting of the Atascosa County Fair Association.

SARWG Members Take 13 Ribbons

SARWG members Susie Higgins (left) and Martin Benke (center) and

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild (SARWG) did real well September 17th at the Medina County Fair Home Wine Competition. SARWG President Jack Keller served as head judge, assisted by Doug Higgins, Mary Ann Daley, and Leslie Lunt. Charlie Suehs chaired the event, served as steward and doubled as auditor with Donna Keller. He also had the pleasure of announcing the winners and presenting them their awards.

SARWG's Martin Benke won Best of Show with a dry Mustang and Susie Higgins was one of three runners-up for BOS with a Merlot. SARWG members also won three first place ribbons, four second places and four third places.

First place ribbons went to Martin Benke (Castroville) for Dry Mustang, Susie Higgins (San Marcos) for Merlot, and Susie Higgins for Dry Plum.

Second place ribbons were won by Susie Higgins for Dry Mustang, Susie Higgins and Martin Benke (tie) for Apricot Dessert and Strawberry Dessert respectively, and Martin Benke for Dry Strawberry.

Third place ribbons were taken by James Wright (Castroville) for a Rosé, James Wright for Dessert Persimmon, Martin Benke for Dry Apricot, and Martin Benke for Sweet Mixed Fruit.

The various county fairs' competitions are an important tier for participation by artists, craftsmen and hobbyists. SARWG's membership salutes these winners and all who competed.

1998 Fall Home Wine Competition Had Stunning Tie

The San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's Fall Home Wine Competition was held November 1st, 1998, at Raymond-Russell Park, I-10 West, north of Loop 1604, between San Antonio and Leon Springs. Competition Chairperson Tom Wells announced the judges could not break a tie for the Best of Show in the non-grape category, so two Best of Shows were awarded in that category and one in the grape category. For Susie Higgins, who walked off with one of the Best of Show distinctions, this was her first competition. We look forward to her future entries.

SARWG President Rodney Hitch did a fantasic job as head judge, and we thank all those who loaned their taste buds and considerable talents to judging the event. Tricia Hitch ran the auditing team and Jan Sundberg managed the sweepstakes. Todd Huntress of San Antonio Home Brew and Wine Supplies donated some very nice prizes to accompany the Best of Show Awards.

Looking Back:

1998 Spring Competition a Huge Success

The Home Wine and Beer Trade Association's International Home Wine Competition, held May 23rd in San Antonio, Texas, was a real feather in San Antonio Regional Wine Guild's (SARWG's) collective cap. In addition to hosting and administering the event, SARWG members won two gold, four silvers, and four bronze medals.

Rodney Hitch, Head Judge, did a terrific job of matching up the resident SARWG judges and guest judges for appropriate categories. Judges may, in fact, enter wines into competition, but may not judge a category they have wine entered in. SARWG extends a collective thanks to Lee Fuqua for the extra effort in driving down from Dallas to help out.

Tricia Hitch, Chief Auditor, had a lot of help from Bob Wehner and Brenda Harper. Our thanks to them for all their dedication and energy in an otherwise thankless job. Jane Sundberg and Kay Wehner did a splendid job in the kitchen.

The judging team consisted of Rod Hitch, Lee Fuqua, Tom Wells, Millie Wells, Paul Newell, Sari-Jane Newell, Charlie Suehs, Steve Nesbit, Greg Howard, Keith Sundberg, Ronnie Manes, and Chris Brogly. Their choices were:
